Artist Profile: Laura George

Education ~ I have a BS and MS degree in Art Education, completed at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. I have been a member of the National Art Education Association for 26 years, and have taught art in Tennessee public schools during this time. My work has been exhibited in multiple Tennessee art Education Association shows held at the Tennessee Statebulldog original painting by Laura George Museum, Watkins School of Art and Belmont University. I have taken several oil painting courses at Hendersonville Arts Council, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and the Alexandria,VA Art League.
Medium ~ I work on canvas with oil, acrylic and mixed media. I enjoy working with oil paint in particular because I like the way that the colors mix and interact with each other. A variety of textural surfaces can be created through application techniques.
Inspiration ~ My favorite place to be is outdoors, so I like to have a camera available when I travel to capture unexpected subject matter. The artist notices elements of design and details in his or her surroundings that most people do not take notice of. I am interested in lighting effects, color combinations, unusual close up views, and the relationships of people with nature. I love to look for this, take a picture and place it in my file for future paintings to create. I train and show dogs and donkeys, so I often do animal portraits for the owners that love them. I want to capture that special personality of the animal and then see the owner's first reaction to the portrait. I will only sell it to them if they are totally pleased by my work.
Other comments ~ I have recently become re-interested in jewelry creation. I studied jewelry and fibers heavily in college, but have not done much work in those areas since then. I am now combining my painting with jewelry by painting animal portraits on pendant stones and working them into necklace pieces. I feel that this gives the animal's owner an affordable memory of their pet that can be taken with them whenever they wish.

A special thanks to Craig Clark of Hire-A-Husband for volunteering his time to hang the artwork.
