A Tribute to Marian Phillips

Marian & Dolly
"All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl."
-Author Unknown
Marian and Dolly watercolor painting by Debbie Reid
While a young girl getting her first pony is a monumental event, the story of Marian and her first pony, Dolly, contains an interesting twist of fate…Marian’s grandfather was of the opinion that Marian needed a nice, gentle pony that she could call her own.  The word around town was that a young boy named Joe from the Prospect Hill Community, northwest of Franklin, was looking for a more “spirited” pony that he could ride around like crazy as young men are wont to do; thus, he had no use for his cute, quiet mare named Dolly.  Well, Marian’s grandfather went to see Dolly and deemed this young boy’s pony perfect for his granddaughter, and that’s how Dolly became Marian’s first pony.  And, years later, that young boy named Joe, the one who needed a more “spirited” pony, became Marian’s husband.

Marian Phillips (1935 – 2008) had two passions in life:  Horses and the Arts.  This painting was commissioned by the Franklin-Simpson Community Arts Council for which Marian Phillips worked so tirelessly for over 25 years bringing the arts to the citizens of Simpson County.

Thank you Marian for your efforts in promoting the Gallery On The Square and to the Phillips family for being willing to share her.
